Darin
KeyOps Business Support Representative
As a KeyOps business support representative, Darin helps support the company’s accounts receivable and payroll software. It’s the perfect position for someone who, as a teenager, enjoyed playing with computers.
But he didn’t start out in the computer field. After high school, he took jobs driving a truck and as a route salesperson for a beer company. Then he entered the oilfield services business as an equipment operator and in 1998 he joined Dawson, which later was acquired by Key Energy Services.
But computers were still Darins first love, so he began taking courses toward a computer networking certification. Meanwhile, Key Energy Services sent him through problem-solving, supervisory and people skills training.
When Key Energy Services began rolling out KeyOps and asked Darin to support the software, he jumped at the opportunity to combine his computer savvy with his newly learned skills. Now he says, “I’m attached to a computer keyboard. It’s my dream job.”

Carlos
Operations Manager
Carlos’ father worked in the oilfield, so it was familiar territory to him when he graduated from high school in Pampa, Texas, and took a job as a floorhand at a local service company.
After earning his commercial driver’s license, Carlos became a frac equipment operator at BJ Services, but a year later, the company closed its Pampa yard. So, he signed on with American Energy Services, which had recently opened in Pampa.
Carlos rose quickly through the ranks to line boss, blender operator and then service supervisor for the company, which eventually was acquired by Key. During the next few years, transfers within Texas took him first to Key’s Chico yard and then in December 2005 to the yard in Cleburne. He was promoted to operations manager, in charge of the frac crew.
Looking back on his career with Key, Carlos says he likes the stability and the competitive wages and benefits. And, he adds this: “You don’t get held back because you don’t have a college degree. As long as you’re a quick learner and are able to do the job, you have a chance to advance.”

Steve
Operations Manager
When Steve helped start a yard for Quality Oilfield Service in Chico, Texas, the site was still an overgrown field. Things have changed at the facility, which eventually was acquired by Key Energy Services. Today, it’s thriving – and as yard operations superintendent until he became district manager for Pressure Pumping Services, Steve played a pivotal role in that growth.
“I’ve hired good people,” he says, “and I’ve watched them progress to being able to do the job and do it very professionally.”
That’s gratifying for Steve, who started out in 1971 as a floorhand for McDonald Well Services, Quality’s predecessor. “We didn’t have a real floor, though,” he recalls. “Everything had to be laid on the ground or on rod horses, because we didn’t have a derrick to hang it on.”
The equipment used in the oilfields isn’t the only change Steve has witnessed. He’s seen how Key Energy Services’ emphasis on safety has made a difference in its employees’ wellbeing.
That’s why he advises new hires to work hard – and be patient. “Key Energy Services is a great place to work, and it’s going in the right direction,” he’ll say. “If you stay with it, you’ll progress.”
